Today, I presented a poem and scripture for my theology/literature course. This was one of the times I have enjoyed working with a partner. That's not always the case. It's too easy for things to go wrong. This time, though, it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed this poem, and want to share it with you. It's surrounded by two scripture passages we thought fit. And, yes, all texts are in the public domain. That means we're dealing with King James English for the Bible passages, but considering that's what Chrles Wesley worked with, it's more fitting.
John 1 9-14 (KJV)
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Glory be to God on high, And Peace on Earth descend: God comes down: He bows the Sky: He shows himself our Friend! God th'Invisible appears, God the Blest, the Great I AM Sojourns in this Vale of Tears, And JESUS is his Name.
Him the Angels all ador'd Their Maker and their King: Tidings of their Humbled LORD They now to Mortals bring: Emptied of his Majesty, Of His dazzling Glories shorn, Beings Source begins to BE And GOD himself is BORN!
See th'Eternal Son of GOD A Mortal Son of Man, Dwelling in an Earthly Clod Whom Heaven cannot contain! Stand amaz'd ye Heavens at This! See the LORD of Earth and Skies Humbled to the Dust He is, And in a Manger lies!
We the Sons of Men rejoice, The Prince of Peace proclaim, With Heaven's Host lift up our Voice, And shout Immanuel's Name; Knees and Hearts to Him we bow; Of our Flesh, and of our Bone JESUS is our Brother now, And GOD is All our own!
Luke 2 6-17 (KJV)
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 and there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
